Nate Cornejo completed a dismal first half with a brilliant performance.
He hopes to follow with another solid effort as he gets his first start since the All-Star break in the third game of a weekend series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.
Cornejo won three of his first five decisions before enduring a 10-start winless streak from May 17-July 4. The 23-year-old right-hander finally got back in the win column with perhaps the best outing of his three-year career on July 10 against the White Sox.
Cornejo scattered seven hits over eight strong innings as the Tigers held on for a 1-0 win at Comerica Park. He had surrendered six earned runs in four of his previous five starts.
“I didn’t want to go into the All-Star break down on myself,” said Cornejo, who had been winless since a 9-2 victory at Tampa Bay on May 11.
The Tigers won Thursday’s series opener 10-9, but suffered a 7-5 setback Friday.
The Tigers failed to secure their second three-game winning streak of the month.
Winners of three of five following a four-game losing streak, the White Sox have beaten the Tigers just twice in the last eight meetings.
