The Arizona Diamondbacks returned from the All-Star break the same way they entered it—as the hottest team in baseball.
But for now, they must forge on without their feisty manager.
Bob Brenly will begin serving his two-game suspension when the Diamondbacks continue their four-game series against the San Diego Padres at Qualcomm Stadium.
Brenly was suspended and fined by baseball disciplinarian Bob Watson on Thursday for throwing a ball into the stands after being ejected from last Friday’s 10-7 loss to San Francisco. Brenly and third base coach Eddie Rodriguez were ejected for arguing balls and strikes during an Arizona pitching change in the seventh inning.
With his back to home plate umpire Tim McClelland, Brenly began shouting his displeasure with McClelland’s strike zone as he awaited a reliever at the mound. After realizing he had been thrown out of the game, Brenly angrily hurled the ball into the stands from the mound.
He wouldn’t talk about the ejection last Friday but expressed some of his thoughts after Thursday’s 9-1 rout of the Padres.
“I’m suspended,” Brenly said. “That’s all there is to it. It serves no purpose to talk about it. It’s a done deal and I’ll live by what they say.”
The Diamondbacks won for the 20th time in 26 games Thursday as Curt Schilling pitched seven strong innings to win for the first time since returning from the disabled list.
Mark Loretta had three hits for the NL worst Padres, who have lost four straight and five of six.
“It’s a rough way to start the second half,” Padres manager Bruce Bochy said.
