David Wells and Roger Clemens were hit hard on consecutive days last weekend.

One day after Wells bounced back from his poor outing, Clemens will try to do the same as the New York Yankees complete a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians at Jacobs Field.

Wells was pounded for eight runs and 10 hits, including five homers, over 5 2-3 innings in a 10-3 loss to Boston on Friday. Clemens wasn’t any better the next day, giving up eight runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 10-2 loss.

However, Wells took a shutout into the eighth inning Wednesday before giving up two runs in a 6-2 win. He gave up nine hits in 7 2-3 innings and improved to 7-0 on the road. He also improved to 18-4 in his career against Cleveland.

Clemens has a good chance to follow Wells with a win, as he is 23-8 with a 3.17 ERA in 42 career starts against the Indians.

The Yankees, who were held to one hit by rookie Billy Traber in a 4-0 loss Tuesday, welcomed back Derek Jeter, Alfonso Soriano and Bernie Williams to their lineup. It was the first time the trio of stars had played together since May 21.

After sitting out a game apiece with hand injuries, Jeter had a season-high four hits and two RBIs and Soriano was 0-for-4 with a run scored. Williams drove home two in his first game in six weeks following arthroscopic knee surgery.

After losing three straight, the Yankees have won three of four.

The Indians had won three straight and eight of 12 before Wednesday’s loss.
