Jake Peavy does not know what caused the twinge in his left side on Saturday. It didn’t make much difference once he stepped on the mound.

Peavy will look to win his fifth consecutive start when the San Diego Padres meet the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series at Qualcomm Stadium.

During his current four-game winning streak, Peavy has allowed just five earned runs in 27 innings.

His best performance in that stretch came on Saturday. Despite a nagging pain in his left side, he limited the Seattle Mariners to three hits over eight innings in a 6-0 win.

“It was something underneath my left rib muscle,” Peavy said. “It might be a cramp. I’m not sure. It never got any worse than what it was in the bullpen (before the game).”

San Diego manager Bruce Bochy considered holding Peavy out of the start, but he’s glad he didn’t.

“He was outstanding, and we were pretty close to scratching him,” Bochy said. “We were concerned it might be an oblique. It gave us a little scare, but maybe it was just a cramp.”

Peavy hopes that cramp will not return as he tries to help the Padres extend their season-high winning streak to six games.

On Thursday, Gary Bennett doubled home two runs and Ryan Klesko hit a two-run homer to help the Padres complete their first series sweep of the season with a 7-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I like the way we’re playing right now,” Bochy said. “The last thing we want right now is the All-Star break coming up because we’re playing better baseball. It’s been a rough first half, but it’s starting to turn around.”

The NL West-leading Giants had won five of six before falling to the St. Louis Cardinals 9-5 on Thursday. Barry Bonds got the afternoon off after hitting two home runs in a 4-1 win on Wednesday night.
