Brower is making a spot start in place of struggling left-hander Damian Moss, who was sent to the bullpen. Brower, who came to San Francisco in the offseason trade that sent Livan Hernandez to Montreal, has made 23 starts in his four-year career, but none since Sept. 20, 2001, as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.
The 30-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with a 4.15 ERA and two saves in 27 relief appearances this season. He pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Moss in Wednesday’s 6-0 home loss to Los Angeles.
“Brower pitches like a starter and he has been a starter,” Giants manager Felipe Alou said. “He is a rubber-arm guy. We have been keeping an eye on Brower since he’s been here.”
Jason Schmidt threw his third consecutive complete game, limiting the Cardinals to seven hits as the Giants took the opener 5-1 Monday in the teams’ first meeting since the 2002 NLCS.
The Cardinals entered Monday’s game hitting an NL-high .292, but all they managed was a solo homer by reigning NL Player of the Week Jim Edmonds. He connected for the fifth time in six games and drove in a run for the seventh straight game.
Albert Pujols was 0-for-4, lowering his major league-leading to .386.
St. Louis, which lost for just the second time in six games, will send Woody Williams to the mound on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old right-hander is coming in off his second straight win, Thursday’s 11-7 home decision over Cincinnati. However, he is just 3-2 with a 4.29 ERA since starting the season 7-0 with a 2.19 ERA.
Williams is 8-1 with a 2.37 ERA at home this season.
