Several of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ best players may be on the disabled list, but that has not been much of a problem for manager Bob Brenly lately.
The Diamondbacks will try to extend their franchise-record winning streak to 12 games when they meet the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a four-game series at Coors Field.
“It seems like our rookies are in the middle of everything right now,” Brenly said. “Not to overlook Gonzo (Luis Gonzalez) and Fins (Steve Finley), but the rookies are getting on base and coming up with big hits to drive in the go-ahead or winning runs. They don’t get rattled and they don’t get awed by the situation—they just go up and do their job.”
In 24 games this season, Hammock is batting .324 with four homers and 17 RBIs.
“We act like rookies off the field,” Hammock said. “But on the field, you are taught to play baseball as soon as you sign. Once you get up here, you are supposed to act like you have been here before. We just try to follow the lead of the older guys.”
The Rockies, who have lost three of four, were pounded by the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-0 on Sunday. They committed two errors and managed just four hits.
Colorado finished a six-game road trip to San Diego and Pittsburgh with a 3-3 record.
