Trying to turn his season around, Odalis Perez hopes to leave his next start on his own terms.
Perez aims to snap a four-decision losing streak as the Los Angeles Dodgers look to salvage one game in the second installment of the Freeway Series at Edison Field.
The 26-year-old left-hander is 0-4 with a 6.62 ERA over his last six starts but is showing signs of escaping his current rut.
He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his previous three starts, pitching at least six innings in each game. However, he has been ejected from two of those outings.
After being thrown out of Los Angels’ 4-3 win over Cleveland on June 13, arguing a call on a stolen base, Perez was tossed in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to San Francisco. He yielded just two runs and four hits in six innings but was ejected for disputing a balk call that preceded Marquis Grissom’s two-run homer.
“I hate to lose,” said Perez, who hasn’t celebrated a victory since a 6-4 win over Milwaukee on May 23. “When somebody takes advantage of me, I’ll be the worst guy in the world. I had to show (the umpire) up, because he made the wrong call.”
After winning the first two games of last weekend’s Freeway Series, the Dodgers have lost five of six, including Saturday’s 3-1 setback.
Bengie Molina had three hits and an RBI for Anaheim, which has outscored the Dodgers 12-4 in winning three straight against their NL rivals.
