The Anaheim Angels will try to continue their success against Japanese left-hander Kazuhisa Ishii when they resume their Freeway Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Edison Field.

Anaheim took the series opener 3-0 to move within a game of .500. John Lackey pitched seven strong innings as the Angels were able to beat Kevin Brown for the second time in a week.

“It was a big game against a big pitcher with a packed house, and that makes it fun,” said Lackey, who held the Dodgers to five hits, struck out three and walked one in 7 1-3 innings.

The Angels have won just four of their last 12 games. The other two victories came against another 10-game winner—Seattle’s Jamie Moyer.

Ishii hasn’t given up more than three earned runs since his first start of the season. However, he has struggled against Anaheim during his career, going 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts.

Los Angeles hopes to provide the 30-year-old southpaw with some support.

“We never did state the fact that we were the ’27 Yankees offensively. We know where our strengths lie,” said manager Jim Tracy of the pitching-rich Dodgers. “We don’t need a touchdown every night to win, but we need to do better than we did tonight and on some other nights.”

The Dodgers haven’t scored more than three runs in any of their last 10 losses.

ANGELS PROBABLE STARTER: Kevin Appier (5-4, 4.82 ERA). Appier has alternated quality starts with poor ones in his last five games. He gave up one run in five innings to beat Los Angeles 6-3 on Sunday. The right-hander is 2-1 with a 3.51 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers.
