When Mike Hampton faced the Philadelphia Phillies last week, he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. The Atlanta Braves also left Veterans Stadium with a loss.

Hampton will look for a better result when the Braves and Phillies conclude their three-game series at Turner Field.

Last Thursday, Hampton held the Phillies hitless until Marlon Byrd singled with one out in the eighth. Philadelphia then rallied for three runs off Hampton and closer John Smoltz in the final two innings to win 3-2.

“It’s about as bad as it gets,” Hampton said. “Everything is great for seven innings and then we lose.”

As Hampton tries to redeem himself, the Braves will be looking to rebound from Wednesday’s 8-1 loss.

After losing 5-3 in Tuesday’s series opener, the Phillies hammered Greg Maddux and the Braves on Wednesday. Bobby Abreu went 3-for-4, and Mike Lieberthal had three RBIs to lead Philadelphia to its fourth win in five games.

The Braves, who had won three of four, scored their lone run on Wednesday on an RBI double by Robert Fick.

Javy Lopez, who is second in the National League with 23 home runs, got the night off because Henry Blanco usually catches Maddux. On Tuesday, Lopez had his sixth two-homer game of the season.

The Phillies took two of three from the Braves at the Vet last week.
