Scott Elarton will get at least one more chance to salvage his spot in the Colorado Rockies’ starting rotation.

That’s what he’ll be trying to do when the Rockies meet the San Diego Padres in the finale of their three-game series at Qualcomm Stadium.

Elarton has been dreadful in recent outings, giving up six earned runs in each of his past three starts. On Friday, the 27-year-old right-hander allowed six runs and nine hits through five innings of a 7-5 to the Detroit Tigers.

“Scott struggled with his command,” Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. “We didn’t get off the hill very well tonight, and we dug ourselves a hole that was tough to recover from.”

The Rockies will likely need a better effort from Elarton as they try to complete their first series sweep since taking three straight against the Cleveland Indians from June 3-5.

On Tuesday, Darren Oliver took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Larry Walker homered for the second straight game, leading the Rockies to a 5-2 win.

Jose Jimenez pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 20 chances, as the Rockies improved to three games above .500 for the first time since they were 15-12 on April 30.

The Padres, who dropped Monday’s series opener 5-1, have lost five of seven.
