Denny Neagle struggled with his command a bit in his first start of the season.

He’ll look to deliver a better performance when the Colorado Rockies conclude their three-game interleague series with the Detroit Tigers at Coors Field.

Neagle was originally scheduled to be the Rockies’ opening day starter, but he spent the first two months of the season on the disabled list with a sore elbow.

When he finally made his debut on Tuesday, he gave up four runs and eight hits over six innings in a 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. He walked three and struck out three.

“It was his first start and four runs in six innings in this ballpark isn’t necessarily a bad thing,” Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. “He got an opportunity to pitch and get his feet underneath him a little bit. Maybe we will get a little better from him in the future.”

Neagle will try to give the Rockies a solid effort as they look to win for the fourth time in their last five games.

On Saturday, Preston Wilson hit a three-run homer and a solo shot to lead the Rockies to a 9-6 win. In the process, he increased his National League-leading RBI total to 66.

Todd Helton and Juan Uribe also had solo homers for Colorado.

The Tigers, who won Friday’s series opener 7-5, have lost five of six.
