Gil Meche will try to become the second Seattle starter to reach 10 wins when he takes the mound for the Mariners in the opener of a weekend interleague series with the San Diego Padres.

The Mariners saw their four-game winning streak end with a 2-0 loss on Thursday to Anaheim. Jamie Moyer was looking for his major league-leading 11th victory, but he was oupitched by Ramon Ortiz.

“I can’t be disheartened or upset. I respect my teammates,” Moyer said. “They are trying to the best of their abilities and Mr. Ortiz threw the ball rather well.”

Meche has won five of his last six starts, including a 2-1 victory over Atlanta on Sunday.

The Mariners will play six of their next nine games against the Padres, who finished up a 10-game road trip with four wins after losing to Colorado 10-5 on Thursday.

San Diego starter Brian Lawrence was touched for six runs and eight hits in four innings.

“Brian wasn’t himself with his command,” San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said. “He got some balls up there and they took advantage of it.”

The Padres haven’t fared well at home lately, dropping four of their last six games at Qualcomm Stadium.
