The right-hander is 2-0 with 13 strikeouts and a 2.08 ERA over his last two starts. Clement had bounced back after a woeful 0-3 record and 7.50 ERA in four May starts.
Despite a grand slam from outfielder Troy O’Leary on Sunday, the Cubs fell to Toronto 5-4 in the 10th inning. It was Chicago’s third loss in four games.
O’Leary has been playing place of Sammy Sosa who has missed five straight games while serving a seven-game suspension for using a corked bat.
“In a perfect world, we’d like to have Sammy here,” said Clement after his last start on Wednesday. “But we don’t, so we have to go about our business and keep working hard.”
The Cubs are 2-3 without their cleanup hitter, who did not accompany the team to Toronto. Sosa is eligible to return on Wednesday in Cincinnati.
The Reds, who have won four of five, should be well rested after their game against the Philadelphia Phillies was rained out on Sunday.
Cincinnati manager Bob Boone plans to keep Sunday’s starter, Paul Wilson, in his regular spot, which means he’ll start Friday at Arizona.
Left-hander Jimmy Anderson will be called up from Triple-A Louisville to start Monday against the Cubs.
Anderson, who will fill the rotation spot left open by injured right-hander John Riedling, was 1-2 with an 8.27 ERA in five games after making the team as a non-roster player in spring training. He was sent down to Triple-A Louisville on April 19 and is 6-1 with a 3.12 ERA in nine starts with the Bats.
“His ball’s been sinking,” manager Bob Boone said. “He’s been keeping everything down, very much like he did in spring training. All the reports say he’s the guy who gets the next shot.”
