Coming off the worst start of his career, Shawn Chacon will try to redeem himself and regain a share of the National League lead for victories when he takes the hill against the lowly Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park.

Chacon was roughed up in a 13-11 loss to visiting Kansas City on Saturday, giving up a franchise-record 12 earned runs, six walks and nine hits over 3 2-3 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander surpassed the previous team record of 11, which he established on July 8, 2001, against Anaheim.

“I never found a groove,” said Chacon, whose ERA jumped from 3.17 to 4.37. “Some days you get away with stuff, but this was one of those days where they didn’t let me get away with anything.”

Chacon had won a career-high fourth straight start prior to Saturday, but missed a chance to keep pace with Los Angeles’ Kevin Brown as the NL’s only nine-game winners. Chacon’s eight victories ties him with St. Louis’ Woody Williams and Philadelphia’s Kevin Millwood, who pitches at Cincinnati Friday.

The Rockies are coming in off a 15-3 loss in Minnesota which left them winless in road series this season.

Larry Walker homered and drove in two runs for Colorado, which lost for the fourth time in its last six overall.

Walker is batting .345 (10-for-29) over his last eight games with two homers and nine RBIs.

The Tigers have dropped seven in a row after the Los Angeles Dodgers completed a three-game sweep with a 3-2 win on Thursday.

Bobby Higginson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Craig Monroe hit a solo homer for Detroit, which has scored more than three runs only twice during its slide.

Monroe has two homers, a double and four RBIs over his last four games.
