Brandon Phillips picked up a huge hit Friday to put his hitless streak to rest.

The rookie second baseman will look to build on that performance when the Cleveland Indians resume their weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark.

Phillips hit a go-ahead single in the sixth inning of the Indians’ 6-3 win on Friday, snapping an 0-for-29 slide. It was his first hit and first RBI since May 26.

“It was about time I got a hit,” he said. “Eventually, I just went out there and tried to put the bat on the ball, and the next thing you know I got a hit.”

Phillips, whose batting average had shrunk to .198 coming into Friday’s game, sat out Thursday for just the fourth time this season.

Ellis Burks, Jody Gerut, Casey Blake, Ben Broussard and Josh Bard also knocked in runs Friday for the Indians, who came in after being swept three straight by the Colorado Rockies.

Robby Hammock, recalled from Triple-A Tucson earlier in the day, hit a two-run double, and Luis Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have lost three of their last five.

The Diamondbacks, whose rotation includes four rookies mostly because of injuries to aces Randy Johnson (knee) and Curt Schilling (hand), will send rookie John Patterson to the mound Saturday.

Patterson, a 25-year-old righty, has lost in each of his first three starts this season, never giving up fewer than four runs.
