The Montreal Expos may be without Vladimir Guerrero much longer than they thought.

As they get ready to play the Texas Rangers in a three-game interleague series in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Expos are also preparing for life without their All-Star outfielder.

On Thursday, Guerrero underwent an MRI that revealed a herniated disc in his back. He will seek a second opinion next week to confirm the diagnosis, but he is likely headed to the 15-day disabled list.

“If the second opinion comes back the way the first one did we’ll probably DL him,” Expos general manager Omar Minaya said. “We’ll then see what the treatment will be and what the best method will be to get him back.”

Guerrero had missed six straight games before playing in the first two games of the Expos’ interleague series against the Anaheim Angels. He sat out Thursday.

Montreal, however, did not need its star in the series finale. After losing the series’ first two games, getting outscored 26-6 in the process, the Expos won 8-7 in 14 innings on Thursday.

After the Expos fell behind 7-5 in the top of the 14th, Ron Calloway hit a game-winning two-run single in the bottom half of the inning. Calloway, filling in for Guerrero, also hit a three-run homer to help the Expos win for just the second time in 10 games.

The Rangers come to Puerto Rico on a six-game losing streak. They were outscored 19-11 in their interleague series with the Atlanta Braves, which concluded with an 8-4 loss Thursday.
