He’ll look to turn in another dominant performance against his former team when the Montreal Expos resume their series with the Marlins at Pro Player Stadium.
After the Marlins won the four-game series opener 5-1 on Monday, the teams were rained out Tuesday—forcing Wednesday’s doubleheader. The rainout was the first for the Marlins at home since July 23, 2001. Since then, they had gone 135 straight home games without a postponement to weather.
Hernandez, who won both the NL championship series and World Series MVP while pitching the Marlins to a title in 1997, tossed his first complete game for the Expos on Thursday. He allowed seven hits in the Expos’ 8-2 rout while throwing 124 pitches.
“I’m the kind of pitcher who throws a lot of pitches in the game, and I like to go a little farther in the game—that’s me,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez, who spent parts of three seasons with the Marlins, is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA in seven career outings against his former team.
The Expos began a 25-day, 22-game trip away from Montreal—which includes a six-game homestand in Puerto Rico—with Monday’s 5-1 loss.
It was the fourth homer of the season for Banks, who has 10 RBIs in his last nine games.
“I’m definitely getting into a rhythm,” Banks said. “When you’re pinch-hitting, it’s tough to get into a rhythm. But when you know you’re getting four at-bats, that puts you at ease.”
The Marlins, who were coming off a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds, are now 7-7 under new manager Jack McKeon.
“You want to keep playing when you’re playing well,” McKeon said. “It’s when you’re playing lousy that you’d rather play some other time.”
