The Atlanta Braves have won 11 straight division titles. However, during that entire span they never had a stretch like this.
Since beginning the season by losing eight of 12, the Braves have gone 23-4. It’s their best 27-game stretch since 1954—the franchise’s second year in Milwaukee.
They’ll look to continue this historic string when they meet Los Angeles in the finale of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium.
Since their poor start to the season, the Braves’ pitching staff has a 3.19 ERA. Their hitters have also been impressive, scoring 206 runs, the second-most in the National League this season.
On Tuesday, the Braves beat the Dodgers 3-1 after Gary Sheffield hit a tiebreaking home run in the top of the eighth. Robert Fick later hit an RBI single to provide the Braves with an insurance run.
John Smoltz pitched the ninth for his major league-leading 16th save in 17 chances. Atlanta has won the last 70 games in which Smoltz has pitched, a major league record.
The Braves clinched their ninth straight series win with Tuesday’s victory. They have not lost a series since dropping two of three at Florida on April 11-13.
The Dodgers had won three consecutive series before opening their nine-game homestand with two straight losses.
