Player Notes
Starling Marte hit a solo home run on Thursday as the Pirates finished off a sweep of the Red Sox with a 3-2 victory.

Advice: Marte's fifth-inning solo homer off of Brandon Workman turned out to be the deciding factor in the game. It's the 25-year-old's 13th of the season and fourth of September. Marte is now batting .289/.358/.458 with 53 RBI and 69 runs scored in what has been a productive 2014 showing.

Starling Marte, starting for the first time since Thursday, went 2-for-4 with a solo home run as the Pirates defeated the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Advice: Marte had missed a handful of games after being hit on the elbow by A.J. Burnett on Thursday. The fourth-inning solo homer, off of Anthony Ranaudo, extended the Pirates' lead to 3-0. Marte now has 12 home runs, 51 RBI, 26 stolen bases, and a .287/.358/.453 slash line on the season.

Starling Marte (elbow) struck out as a pinch-hitter in Sunday's series finale with the Cubs.

Advice: Marte didn't start a game the entire series due to the left elbow bruise that he suffered last Thursday when he was struck by a pitch. He should be fine to return to the Pirates' starting lineup early this week.

Starling Marte (elbow) remains out of the Pirates' starting lineup Saturday versus the Cubs.

Advice: Marte has been sidelined taking a pitch off his left elbow Thursday. X-rays were negative but he has a significant contusion and some swelling. The speedster will be available as a pinch-runner on Saturday, but there is no timetable for his full-time return.

Starling Marte has been diagnosed with a left elbow contusion.

Advice: It presumably means that he passed an X-ray or it was determined that he didn't need one. Marte was unsure whether he'd be ready to play on Friday, but it sounds like he can safely be considered day-to-day.

Starling Marte left Thursday's game versus the Phillies with left arm discomfort after being hit by a pitch.

Advice: Marte was plunked by A.J. Burnett in the first inning, and although he initially stayed in, he eventually exited after the top of the third. It's not clear at this point how long he might be out, but the Pirates should provide more on his status after the game.
