Player Notes
Tigers and OF J.D. Martinez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a two-year, $18.5 million contract.

Advice: The deal was reported on Monday and it's now official. Per Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press, Martinez will make $6.75 million in 2016 and $11.75 million in 2017. The two-year deal buys out his final two seasons of arbitration-eligibility, so he's still scheduled to hit free agency after 2017. The 28-year-old led the Tigers with 38 homers and 102 RBI last season.

SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports that the Tigers and J.D. Martinez have agreed to a two-year contract.

Advice: Robert Murray of BaseballEssential.com hears that the deal, which buys out Martinez's final two years of arbitration eligibility, is worth $18.5 million. The 28-year-old slashed .282/.344/.535 with 38 home runs and 102 RBI across 158 games last season for the Tigers. He'll operate as the Tigers' regular right fielder again in 2016.

The Tigers are still discussing one and two-year deals with J.D. Martinez, according to Fox Sports' Jon Morosi.

Advice: There was talk of a long-term extension last month, but those negotiations have clearly been scaled back. Martinez carries two more years of salary arbitration (including this year), so neither of the deals being discussed now would cut into his potential free agency. The two sides were $2 million apart when arbitration figures were exchanged in January. If a compromise can't be reached, the Tigers will be subject to their first arbitration hearing since 2001. Martinez led Detroit with 38 homers and 102 RBI last season.
