Astros sluggers give Cardinals pitchers Kyle Gibson and Matthew Liberatore an early test

Sonny Gray's hamstring injury presented the Cardinals pitching staff with an early test of their depth and resolve. The Houston Astros provided a different test Thursday afternoon. The Astros brought what very well could be their opening day lineup to Roger Dean Stadium to match up with Cardinals pitchers Kyle Gibson and Matthew Liberatore for the better part of six innings. Gibson, one of the key offseason additions for the Cardinals rotation along with Lance Lynn and Gray, experienced a Jekyll and Hyde outing in three innings against a lineup that included former AL MVP award winner Jose Altuve as well as multi-time All-Stars and former Silver Slugger award winners Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez.

As of the fifth inning, the Cardinals are still seeking their first homer of spring. The Cardinals avoided being shut out for the second consecutive game when Cesar Prieto delivered an RBI single ninth inning against the Nats.
