Wood (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Tuesday, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports.
Recommendation: The move was made to open up a 40-man roster spot for Will Smith, who will join the Royals' bullpen Tuesday night in New York. Wood will miss the rest of the season due to an upcoming Tommy John surgery.

RHP Blake Wood, who is scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. A move was necessary to make space on the 40-man roster for LHP Will Smith, who had his contract purchased from Class AAA Omaha. Wood was 6-6 with a 4.30 ERA in 106 relief appearances the past two seasons, but he was hurt in spring training and did not pitch this season.
