Player Notes
Junichi Tazawa pitched terribly in the 10th inning of Friday's win over the Mets, walking four and allowing one run in 2/3 of an inning.

Advice: Tazawa came on with the Red Sox holding a 6-3 lead in the 10th inning, then proceeded to almost blow that advantage. The strangest bit of his appearance is that he picked up the first two outs relatively easily. Then, things became considerably less easy, as Tazawa walked four straight batters to force in a run. Craig Breslow had to come out of the pen to relieve the closer in mid-inning, something that's rarely seen. We'll see if the Sox opt to continue sticking with him in this role, but Friday's appearance could not have been encouraging. Tazawa's now the owner of a 3.79 ERA.

Junichi Tazawa recorded his third save with a scoreless ninth Wednesday against the White Sox.

Advice: Tazawa allowed a leadoff single, only because he failed to cover first base on the grounder to the right side. He then retired three in a row. Tazawa was coming off a horrible outing Sunday against the Royals in which he gave up four runs and could have allowed more. The Red Sox, though, are sticking with him as the closer.

Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that he will stick with Junichi Tazawa as the team's closer.

Advice: Tazawa allowed four earned runs on six hits en route to blowing a save on Sunday, but the Red Sox will keep him in the ninth inning for now. "I think we're going to stay with Taz, for sure," Lovullo said. "He's probably going to get a day off today. He threw 30-31 pitches. We want to give him the ball in the ninth inning, just because you might have a situation where you don't get the job done and don't execute, it wouldn't help him right now to just pull it away from him. That's not what we're about. We want to be consistent with what’s happening every day, and Taz is our closer and we like him in that situation." If Boston does eventually decide to make a change, Jean Machi is likely next in line for saves.

Junichi Tazawa blew a save in brutal fashion Sunday afternoon against the Royals, allowing four earned runs on six hits in the top of the ninth inning.

Advice: Tazawa was dreadful from the jump, and the Boston dugout let him wear it. He faced eight batters, and seven of them reached base. It actually could have been an uglier outing, but the Red Sox cut down two Kansas City runners. The back end of the Boston bullpen is a mess.

Sun, Aug 23 Rotoworld
Junichi Tazawa earned a save for the second straight day with a perfect ninth against the Royals on Thursday.

Advice: Tazawa only had to protect a three-run lead tonight, but he did it with ease, throwing nine of his 10 pitches for strikes. The Red Sox might not want to use him if they have another save situation on Friday, but he'd definitely seem to be the closer now.

Thu, Aug 20 Rotoworld
Junichi Tazawa notched his first save of the year with a perfect ninth inning against the Indians on Wednesday.

Advice: Despite his recent struggles and his failure in his first real save chance a week ago, Tazawa was John Farrell's go-to guy tonight and it worked out nicely. It also helps Tazawa's case that Jean Machi gave up a three-run homer in the eighth (without which there would have been no save opportunity at all). The job definitely seems to be Tazawa's to win.
