Player Notes
ESPN's Buster Olney reports the Marlins have signed catcher A.J. Ellis to a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

Advice: Ellis will head to Miami to act as J.T. Realmuto's backup catcher. The veteran hit just .216/.301/.298 in 2016 between the Dodgers and Phillies, but his clubhouse rep is exceptional and he's had some decent seasons in the past.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Marlins are showing interest in free agent A.J. Ellis.

Advice: Miami needs a new backup catcher with Jeff Mathis having signed a two-year, $4 million contract with the Diamondbacks last week. Ellis batted just .216/.301/.298 in 2016, but he's a well-liked guy with a decent career OBP of .340. It's a pretty good fit.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that there is mutual interest between the Phillies and free agent catcher A.J. Ellis.

Advice: Stark says it would be a "catcher, leader, unofficial coach" type of role for the 35-year-old backstop, who was dealt from the Dodgers to the Phillies this past August for Carlos Ruiz. Ellis batted just .216/.301/.298 overall in 2016, though he did finish strong in his 35 plate appearances down the stretch with Philadelphia.
