Player Notes
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday that Daniel Murphy (hamstring) is "touch and go" to avoid a stint on the disabled list.

Advice: Murphy was slated to get some at-bats in another minor league game Monday, but he's not ready to run the bases and Opening Day isn't the be-all and end-all. If he's not quite ready, look for the Mets to use Danny Muno at second base. The Mets could backdate a stint on the DL for Murphy, so he could return as soon as April 11.

Daniel Murphy (hamstring) took five at-bats in a minor league game Saturday.

Advice: Murphy is trying to get back for the start of the regular season, but he hasn't progressed to playing the field and time is running out. That he's able to hit is a good sign that he's not far off from a return, though. Even if Murphy starts the year on the disabled list, it isn't likely to be a long stay.

Mets manager Terry Collins indicated Friday that Daniel Murphy (hamstring) is likely to begin the season on the disabled list.

Advice: "He's running out of time," Collins said. "... We don't have a lot of time. I'm going to talk to Dan tomorrow. We don't have a lot of time to get him ready. I got word of what he did today, and we certainly have to speed it up a little bit. So I'm getting a little concerned he's not going to have enough time." General manager Sandy Alderson expressed a similar sentiment, saying it "would be a little surprising" if Murphy made it back "sooner than roughly Opening Day." Alderson added that Murphy is likely to play in minor league games next week even if plays in games at all. That would allow the Mets to backdate his DL stint, potentially setting him up to miss as few as six games.

Daniel Murphy (hamstring) ran Thursday without issue.

Advice: He also made it through some light baseball drills on Wednesday. Murphy pulled his hamstring a week ago but seems likely to be fine for the start of the season.

Daniel Murphy (hamstring) did limited baseball activities for a second straight day Wednesday and said he's cautiously optimistic about being ready for the season.

Advice: "Each day is getting better," said Murphy, who pulled his hamstring last Thursday. As long as he continues to make progress, being in the Opening Day lineup is realistic. The Mets are looking at Matt Reynolds and Danny Muno as alternatives for second base if he needs to start the year on the DL.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday that they are getting encouraging signs on Daniel Murphy's hamstring.

Advice: Murphy pulled his hamstring last Thursday and is expected to be shut down until later this week. It depends on how he progresses, but the Mets haven't ruled him out for Opening Day. Matt Reynolds and Danny Muno are options to fill in at second base if he needs extra time.
