Meek was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, the Pirates' official Twitter feed reports.
Recommendation: He struggled in his most recent appearance Wednesday, and was sent down to clear space on the roster for Gorkys Hernandez as the Pirates open up a three-game series in Detroit with the benefit of having a DH spot in their lineup.

RHP Evan Meek, in his first appearance back in the majors, gave up a three-run double Wednesday. Manager Clint Hurdle was taking heat on the talk shows back in Pittsburgh for using Meek with the Pirates behind by just a run. "Evan was brought here to pitch," Hurdle said. "He's put his time in. He's worked hard. For me, it was why not get Evan in the game, one run down? Evan came out fresh. He got an out, then he cut up Ian Desmond nice, you see the velocity spike to 95-96 mph. Then it got away from him a little bit."

Advice: Meek, an NL All-Star in 2010, was sent to Indianapolis on May 1 with a 5.59 ERA in nine games with Pittsburgh. He allowed just two hits in six scoreless innings at Indianapolis.
