Player Notes
ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Orioles and Padres have discussed a trade that would send Justin Upton to Baltimore.

Advice: The O's have been one of the clubs connected to Upton previously. However, Stark also notes that the deal could be expanded to include Andrew Cashner or Tyson Ross. It's unclear at this point how close something might be to getting done. The Orioles have been mentioned as a possible seller, but they sit just 3.5 games out of a Wild Card spot and this rumor would seem to indicate that they have no plans to give up on a playoff run.

Justin Upton clobbered his 16th home run of the season on Sunday, powering the Padres to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Marlins.

Advice: Upton got the scoring started with his solo blast off Marlins starter Mat Latos in the second inning. He also singled and walked in the contest, finishing the afternoon 2-for-3, raising his season slash to .251/.330/.429 to go along with 16 homers and 50 RBI.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Mets and Padres have reached an impasse in trade talks for Justin Upton.

Advice: The Padres are reportedly demanding at least one high-end prospect, possibly two, but the Mets have balked at the high asking price. While the two sides could certainly resume talks, it seems more likely that the Mets will target a lower-level outfielder such as Gerardo Parra from the Brewers, rather than mortgage any part of their future.

Justin Upton (oblique) has returned to the Padres starting lineup on Friday.

Advice: Upton missed the previous four games due to an oblique issue. The 27-year-old, who is a hot commodity on the trade market, is slashing .251/.330/.425 with 15 homers, 49 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 90 games on the year.

Justin Upton (oblique) is expected back in the Padres' lineup on Friday.

Advice: Upton missed a fourth straight start on Thursday, but he took batting practice before the game and then pinch-hit in it. The outfielder has been battling tightness in his left oblique.

Justin Upton (oblique) said that he felt better on Thursday, but remained out of the lineup for a fourth straight game.

Advice: Upton was scheduled to take batting practice on Thursday, and there have been no indications that anything went wrong with that session. He should still be considered day-to-day with a return over the weekend looking more and more likely.

Justin Upton (oblique) remained out of the Padres' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: It's the third straight game he's missed after he tweaked his left oblique on Sunday. The Padres remain hopeful that Upton will avoid a trip to the disabled list, especially since they're likely to trade him soon. Abraham Almonte is in left field Wednesday.

Justin Upton is out of the Padres' lineup again on Tuesday due to tightness in his left oblique.

Advice: Upton had to pulled from Sunday's eventual rainout against the Rockies because of oblique discomfort and he hasn't played since. The injury comes with bad timing for the Padres, who figure to be shopping the 27-year-old Upton ahead of the July 31 deadline. Will Venable is starting in left field on Tuesday night against the Giants.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that the Mets aren't in on Padres outfielder Justin Upton.

Advice: The Mets have a clear need in their outfield and in the middle of their lineup, but the cost in prospects and salary (Upton is making $14.5 million this season) probably makes it unrealistic. However, they are considering a number of options in the wake of Michael Cuddyer's knee injury, including lesser trade targets and a potential promotion of top prospect Michael Conforto.

Justin Upton (oblique) is not in the Padres' lineup Monday.

Advice: Upton had to be lifted from Sunday's game with tightness in his left oblique. It's an ailment that often leads to a disabled list stint, but the Padres seem convinced that this flare-up is minor. Will Venable is in left field Monday, with Melvin Upton in center.
