LHP Doug Slaten was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks, giving the Nationals another left-handed option in a bullpen that was among the majors' worst in 2009. Slaten, 29, was a key contributor to Arizona's 2007 NL West title run, posting a 2.72 ERA in 61 appearances. But after undergoing knee surgery, he struggled the next two seasons and spent most of 2009 at Class AAA Reno (Nev.). The Nationals figure to use Slaten as a matchup reliever, pitting him against top left-handed hitters. |

The Washington Nationals claimed Slaten off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Advice: Slaten, who will turn 30 before the start of next season, is a middle reliever who spent most of 2009 at Triple-A Reno, going 3-2 with nine saves and a 3.09 ERA in 39 appearances. He had a 7.11 ERA with no decisions in 11 appearances with the Diamondbacks this season, and is 3-5 with a 3.68 ERA in the majors since 2006, all with Arizona. |
