RHP Casey Janssen needed 30 pitches to work through a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation in Wednesday's 5-4, 11-inning loss to Tampa Bay. It was one short of his highest pitch total of the season. He has twice used 31 pitches in an outing this season -- April 7, when he pitched two innings, and April 10, when he pitched one inning. Since then, his highest pitch total for an outing until Wednesday was 17 on April 14. Since taking over as closer on May 9, Janssen is 3-for-3 in save opportunities, making a total of 36 pitches over those three outings, each one inning.

Janssen tossed a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to record the save against the Yankees on Thursday.
Recommendation: Janssen has converted all three of his save chances since taking over the closer role. He'll continue to pitch in the ninth inning until Sergio Santos returns from the DL.
