Player Notes
Glen Perkins has been shut down for the remainder of the 2014 season due to a left forearm strain and nerve irritation in his left elbow.

Advice: It's actually terrific news for the Twins and for Perkins, as a precautionary MRI revealed no damage to his UCL. He'll take part in an offseason strengthening program, and is expected to be back to full-strength in around two months. He'll be ready to go for spring training 2015.

LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Glen Perkins is dealing with "some nerve irritation and maybe a slight muscle strain" in his left elbow.

Advice: Neal adds that the ailment "doesn't appear to be serious." However, with just a week and a half left in the season, the closer will undoubtedly be shut down. The good news is that it doesn't sound like it will be a long-term issue for Perkins. Jared Burton will continue to fill in as the Twins' closer.

Glen Perkins will undergo an MRI exam on his left elbow/biceps area on Thursday.

Advice: Perkins looked abysmal on Tuesday night, surrendering a three-run home run to J.D. Martinez en route to blowing his seventh save of the season. He certainly hasn't looked right as of late, posting a 14.21 ERA and 2.21 WHIP over his last eight outings (6 1/3 innings), so hopefully Thursday's exam will provide some answers. Casey Fien or Jared Burton would likely get the call to work the ninth inning in his absence.

Glen Perkins (neck) won't pitch on Wednesday night.

Advice: Perkins, who's been dealing with neck discomfort all month, allowed a three-run homer to blow a save opportunity on Tuesday. He was scheduled to be examined by Twins team doctors on Wednesday afternoon. Jared Burton will close if needed Wednesday versus Detroit.

Glen Perkins served up a three-run home run to blow a save opportunity against the Tigers Tuesday.

Advice: Perkins put runners on the corners with one out and a two-run lead. He then got the dangerous Victor Martinez to pop out, lending hope to the idea that he might get out of the jam unscathed. A J.D. Martinez three-run homer dashed that hope, serving Perkins with his seventh blown save of the season. He stuck around to get the win, but it's little consolation for Perkins' owners. The closer has now allowed runs in four of his last five outings.

Glen Perkins allowed a solo home run but nothing more, earning the save in Sunday's win over the White Sox.

Advice: After blowing a save and taking the loss Saturday, Perkins got right back on the horse to get the save Sunday. He served up a solo homer to Jose Abreu -- not the first pitcher to get victimized by Abreu -- but he closed out the game without incident after that. He's been shaky since late August, but Perkins is still the guy in Minnesota and he needs to be started while he's getting saves.

Glen Perkins blew his seventh save of the season as the Twins dropped the second half of a doubleheader Saturday night against the White Sox.

Advice: The Twins also lost the first game, 5-1. They carried a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning in the nightcap, but Perkins walked Jose Abreu and then served up a two-run walkoff shot to Dayan Viciedo. He was bothered earlier this month by a neck injury and might not be completely over it yet.

Glen Perkins (neck) was cleared to return to action Thursday.

Advice: Perkins hasn't pitched since last Friday due to soreness in his neck, but he's made significant progress in recent days and is ready for the next save chance when it presents itself. The left-hander holds a 2.88 ERA and 65/10 K/BB ratio over 59 1/3 innings this season while converting 33-of-38 save opportunities.
