Martin was given a night off Tuesday and will also be out of Wednesday's lineup as Joe Torre wants to give the struggling catcher time to "clear his head", the LA Times reports. Recommendation: Martin is batting just .247 with one home run on the year, but considering his recent consistency, don't be surprised if he has a strong second half. |

C Russell Martin, an All-Star both of the past two seasons but mired in a slump for most of this year, was out of the starting lineup each of the past two games, giving him an extended rest with the team off Thursday. Manager Joe Torre met privately with Martin following Monday night's win over Colorado. "He is just fighting it so bad right now," Torre said.
Martin has one home run this season after hitting a total of 32 the past two years. He is hitting .246, with a total of 11 extra-base hits (10 doubles) in 248 at-bats. |
