Player Notes
Mets manager Terry Collins estimated Tuesday that David Wright won't be ready to play the field until around mid-March.

Advice: Wright, who is coming back from neck surgery and battling spinal stenosis in his back, played catch Tuesday for the second time this spring. He's going to be eased into action as a DH and in minor league games before testing himself in the field. "He is making strides," said Collins. "You are looking at, three weeks from today we will have a real good idea where he is at. That gives him a lot of time to lengthen himself out." It's ultimately hard to say if he'll be ready for Opening Day until he really starts ramping things up.

David Wright (neck) played catch on a back field Tuesday at Mets camp.

Advice: The veteran third baseman is being kept away from the media as he tries to return from last June's cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. "We don’t want him overexposed to where ... if he makes a bad throw, all of a sudden, it’s a big story," manager Terry Collins said. "We want to make sure that when he starts out there throwing in front of everybody, that he’s certainly ready to let it loose." Wright is aiming to be ready for Opening Day, but the question marks abound.

David Wright (neck) played catch indoors on Sunday.

Advice: He didn't play catch outside with the rest of his Mets teammates, but it was the first time Wright has done any throwing since last June's cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. The club will continue to bring the veteran third baseman along slowly this spring, as Wright's participation in Grapefruit League games figures to be fairly limited. He's obviously a major health question mark going into 2017.

David Wright (neck) is tentatively scheduled to play catch on Sunday.

Advice: It would be his first time throwing a baseball since last June. The Mets are bringing Wright along slowly this spring as he works his way back from a cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. His health status figures to be a daily topic of conversation throughout spring training.

Mets manager Terry Collins hasn't ruled out David Wright (neck) taking some grounders at first base later in camp.

Advice: The possibility of Wright seeing some time at first base has been raised in the past, so it's not surprising to see it come up again. Whether it actually comes to fruition is another matter altogether. Wright is just easing back into some baseball activities as he makes his way back from a cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. He hasn't even begun throwing yet, so it's hard to know what to expect until he starts ramping things up. Either way, the expectation is that he'll see some time at designated hitter before playing the field. Jose Reyes is the backup plan at third base.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday that David Wright (neck) will begin throwing sometime this week.

Advice: Wright resumed baseball activities earlier this month and took batting practice in the cage on Monday as he eases back into things following a cervical discectomy and fusion surgery. "It’s a day to day," Collins said Monday. "We want to try and set something down on paper for David, to be smart. We realize it has to be adjusted each and every day. There are going to be times he is going to get up in the morning, he’s not going to feel very good and we’re going to have to adjust that day." As Collins alluded to, the Mets have no idea what they're going to get out of Wright and will proceed cautiously with him following two years plagued by back and neck issues. Jose Reyes offers insurance at third base.
