Player Notes
Melvin Upton is batting cleanup in his first start with the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Advice: Upton was acquired from San Diego on Tuesday morning in exchange for pitching prospect Hansel Rodriguez. He will start in left field over Michael Saunders with the Padres throwing right-hander Luis Perdomo.

Blue Jays acquired OF Melvin Upton and cash considerations from the Padres for RHP Hansel Rodriguez.

Advice: Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears that the Padres will cover all but $5 million of the roughly $22 million remaining on Upton's contract. The 31-year-old has enjoyed a resurgent season with the Padres and will provide some depth and versatility to the Blue Jays' outfield. While the ballpark change is a positive, he might lose a couple of starts a week and probably won't run as much. His fantasy value takes a bit of a dip with the trade. Since the Padres are in Toronto this week, Upton will just have to switch dugouts on Tuesday.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays have agreed to acquire outfielder Melvin Upton from the Padres.

Advice: The Padres are expected to receive a Class A prospect in return. No word yet on the financial details, but the deal is expected to be finalized on Tuesday. Upton is batting .256/.304/.439 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, and 20 steals across 95 games this season and should add some versatility to Toronto's outfield. The addition could allow Jose Bautista to see more time out of the designated hitter spot and Edwin Encarnacion to play more first base. Upton is still under contract (for $16.45 million) next season, which is notable with Bautista, Encarnacion, and Michael Saunders due to hit free agency this winter. The Padres are expected to pick up some of the tab.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays are the "front-runners" for Padres outfielder Melvin Upton.

Advice: Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported over the weekend that the Orioles and Blue Jays were the leaders in pursuit for Upton, but it appears that Toronto has emerged as the favorite in the past day or so. Rosenthal hears that the Indians are also in the mix. Upton has enjoyed a resurgent season in San Diego, batting .256/.304/.439 with 16 home runs, 45 RBI, and 20 steals across 95 games. He's under contract for $16.45 million next season.

Melvin Upton is out of the Padres' lineup for a second straight day Monday.

Advice: It's obviously a bit curious as Upton's name continues to float in trade rumors, but Padres manager Andy Green said that nothing is done yet and that the decision was made to give him a couple of days off. It still sounds very likely he'll be traded by August 1. Alex Dickerson will start in left field again Monday.

Melvin Upton is not in the Padres' lineup Sunday.

Advice: It's interesting, obviously, with the rumors floating around regarding Upton being traded soon. For now, though, it doesn't appear anything is imminent. Alex Dickerson is in left field.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the Orioles and Blue Jays are the leaders in the pursuit of Melvin Upton.

Advice: The interest in Upton has certainly intensified in the past day or so, and it's looking increasingly likely that he'll be wearing a new uniform in August. While a park shift away from Petco Park could seem like a boon to his fantasy value, he hasn't handled changes of scenery well in the past, and isn't likely to land with a manager as willing to run as Andy Green has been this season.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Blue Jays have discussed Melvin Upton and Andrew Cashner with the Padres.

Advice: Rosenthal notes that it's unclear if the Jays would have interest in just Upton if they can't get Cashner. The Padres seem to be pitting potential suitors against one another in an effort to drive up the price on their available pieces. Where there's this much smoke, there's usually fire, so don't be surprised to see some sort of deal get done in the next couple of days.

Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Indians have had conversations with the Padres in recent weeks about Melvin Upton.

Advice: Olney notes that while the two clubs have talked, nothing is close regarding a potential deal. The interest around Upton has picked up considerably in the last couple of days and it looks like there's a strong likelihood that he could get moved before next week's trade deadline. The Orioles are reported to be in negotiations for him as well.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Orioles have talked to the Padres about Melvin Upton.

Advice: Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported earlier in the day that the Padres had told suitors that they were close to dealing Upton, and perhaps it's the O's who are hot on the trail after losing Joey Rickard for the next 4-to-6 weeks. It would certainly be an upgrade in home ballpark for Upton.
