May 7
Gonzalez had a minor setback this week in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but is still expected back near the end of the month, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Advice: Gonzalez hasn't pitched since May 15, 2007. He was having a strong season before injuring his elbow, going 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA and two saves in 18 games. If he can regain that form, he'll bolster Atlanta's bullpen. Continue to monitor his progress. |

Gonzalez (Tommy John surgery) had a little tightness in his left elbow this past weekend, but he still plans to pitch in a minor league game again on Wednesday or Thursday, the team's official web site reports. Recommendation: It was thought Gonzalez could return as early as late May, but this may push back that timetable into June. With Rafael Soriano, Pete Moylan and John Smoltz all on the DL, Gonzalez could become the only experienced closer in the bullpen when he returns. Still, we'd temper expectations for his return, as he still hasn't faced any major league hitters since May 2007. |

LHP Mike Gonzalez's pitches are hitting 90, measured by the gun at the Braves' extended spring training. Gonzalez has a few more mph to go but is, amazingly, on track for a mid-May return. |
