RHP Todd Wellemeyer rose to the challenge, knowing that he had been pitching poorly and that injured Kyle Lohse was making a rehab start on the same night. Wellemeyer blanked San Francisco for seven innings before allowing a two-run homer to Aaron Rowand in the eighth inning. Showing some renewed focus, Wellemeyer threw 65 strikes out of 99 pitches. |

Wellemeyer turned in an excellent effort Thursday, allowing two runs on seven hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out six. Recommendation: Wellemeyer was essentially pitching for his spot in the rotation, and he delivered with his first quality start since May 22. |
