Matsui went 3-for-4 with a home run and six RBI in Thursday's World Series-clinching win over the Phillies. He was named Series MVP after going 8-for-13 with three homers and eight RBI in six games. Recommendation: Matsui powered the Yankees to a 4-1 lead, then added a two-run double in the fifth to tie the World Series record for RBI in a single game. The 35-year-old will be a free agent this offseason, and his creaky knees make it somewhat unlikely that the Yankees will bring him back. Nothing will be decided yet, but if this was Matsui's final game in pinstripes, it was just about the perfect sayonara. |

Matsui became the first Japanese-born player to win the World Series MVP award that started in 1955. Advice: He homered, doubled and singled, highlighting a Series in which he hit .615 with three home runs and eight RBIs. Matsui became the first player to win the award as a full-time DH in the Series. Toronto DH Paul Molitor played in the field when the Blue Jays won the 1993 title. Matsui became the 11th Yankees player to win the award, joining teammates Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, along with the likes of Reggie Jackson and Whitey Ford. |

DH Hideki Matsui, the World Series MVP, gave the Yankees a lot to think about this offseason thanks to a solid regular season and his impressive postseason, capped by a World Series single-game record-tying six RBIs in the Game 6 clincher. It's long been rumored the Yankees would let Matsui walk as a free agent because they don't think he can play the field on his surgically repaired knees and they may need to move other veterans into the DH spot more often. GM Brian Cashman deferred questions on Matsui's status during the World Series celebration, saying the time for business decisions would be soon enough. |
