Player Notes
Fernando Rodney earned his 16th save of the season in Sunday's win over the A's, despite allowing a hit and a walk in the scoreless ninth.

Advice: If nothing else, Rodney certainly knows how to offer an entertaining ninth inning. Holding a 2-1 lead over the A's on Sunday, he recorded the first two outs in routine fashion. Then, the Fernando Rodney Save Experience swung into full effect, as he allowed an infield single to Josh Reddick and a walk to Ike Davis. He managed to retire Mark Canha on a grounder to end the game, but still. This is why the Mariners can't have nice things. Rodney is working to regain his role as closer, but it's clear to anybody watching that Fernando Rodney is who he is and will continue to pitch like Fernando Rodney. Loops of logic aside, he currently holds a 5.18 ERA and a 27/17 K/BB ratio over 33 innings while going 16-for-19 in save chances.

Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless ninth in a tie game Sunday against the Angels.

Advice: It's another step towards Rodney regaining the closer's role. He's turned in seven straight scoreless appearances.

Mariners manger Lloyd McClendon said Saturday the he hopes Fernando Rodney regains his closer job.

Advice: Carson Smith is 5-for-5 in save chances and is clearly the M's best reliever right now, but McClendon would prefer to use him in a setup role and have Rodney back in the ninth. Rodney on Friday earned his first save since May 29, but he still has some work to do to get his old job back. "My hope," McClendon said, "is Rodney becomes that lock-down ninth-inning guy again. I think we’re a better club if he’s in the ninth, Carson is in the eighth and (Mark) Lowe and (Charlie) Furbush in the seventh. It closes the gap tremendously. That’s my hope. But I don’t know if that’s going to happen or when it’s going to happen. For right now, we’ll keep doing what we’re doing. We’ve got to win ballgames."

Fernando Rodney got to work the ninth Friday against the Angels and picked up his 15th save with a scoreless inning.

Advice: Manager Lloyd McClendon played it smart and had Carson Smith face Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in the eighth, giving Rodney the easier part of the lineup in the ninth. It doesn't mean Rodney is back in the closer's role, though it's still possible things will start to swing that way. The save was Rodney's first since May 29.
