RHP Brad Lidge, four days removed from the disabled list with a balky right knee, wasn't happy when slow-footed Toronto C Raul Chavez dropped a bunt single on the first pitch of the ninth inning Sunday. But with help from pinch-runner John McDonald, Lidge recovered and earned his first save since June 1. Lidge took a longer-than-usual stroll around the mound, refocusing his mind and making sure his knee was fine. Then, he picked McDonald off second base and retired both Aaron Hill and Vernon Wells to secure a come-from-behind 5-4 win. The bunt was a test of Lidge's knee. He said it passed. "I walked around and tested it a little bit, and it felt fine," Lidge said. "I just had that feeling that it was going to get done. I was able to push off and get the direction I want to on my fastball, so I was confident that it would work. I felt like I had control of the game." |

Lidge recorded his first save since June 1 with a scoreless ninth inning against the Blue Jays on Sunday. Recommendation: His knee also held up when Raul Chavez laid down a bunt with a runner on first base. Lidge survived a leadoff walk to Marco Scutaro before recording three straight outs to finish off the Jays on Sunday. |

Lidge's knee faced a big test in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Blue Jays. Activated off the disabled list last week after being out since June 9 with a sprained right knee, Lidge had to move quickly when Blue Jays catcher Raul Chavez bunted to begin the ninth, reaching safely when Lidge's throw pulled Ryan Howard off first base. Advice: "They probably know why I came off the DL and they tried to test it," said Lidge, who recorded his 14th save. "Unfortunately he laid a perfect bunt down, too. I was able to get to it and grab the ball and throw it and no damage. I walked around the mound just to take inventory, make sure everything felt all right, and it did. That was huge for me." |
