RHP Adam Eaton, struggling once again for the Phillies, has been moved to the bullpen. Manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee, who traveled separately to Miami from their Florida homes after the All-Star break, broke the news to Eaton.
Eaton, 3-8 with a 5.71 ERA in 19 starts, said he wasn't surprised by the move. He allowed 14 earned runs in 6 1/3 innings over his last two starts and has a 6.20 ERA in his last 13 starts. The Phillies believe newly acquired RHP Joe Blanton, known for logging innings during his career with the Athletics, is a rotation upgrade over Eaton.
The Phillies intend to use Eaton as a long reliever. He has made two career relief appearances, both for the Padres. He threw a scoreless ninth inning Aug. 2, 2005, in Pittsburgh, then allowed four runs in the ninth inning two days later against the Pirates. |

The Philadelphia Phillies moved Adam Eaton to the bullpen Friday to open a spot in the rotation for newly acquired Joe Blanton, who is expected to start for the team Tuesday against the New York Mets. Advice: Eaton has started all but two of the 195 games he has pitched in the majors, but is switching to long relief. |
