Angels manager Mike Scioscia confirmed Saturday night that Downs is currently the team's closer, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Recommendation: The statement followed Downs' appearance in the eighth inning Friday night while Ernesto Frieri was warming up for a potential save opportunity in the ninth. Frieri could eventually become a ninth-inning option, however, and it appears as though he would get an opportunity to close before the job is given back to Jordan Walden in the event that Downs falters.

LHP Scott Downs pitched a scoreless eighth with the Angels leading by two runs Friday and RHP Ernesto Frieri seemed set to pitch the ninth in a save situation before the Angels broke the game open. Angels manager Mike Scioscia denied that meant Downs has been moved out of the closer role. "No, we're going to mix and match a little bit," Scioscia said. "It's really just a matchup situation. It might change tomorrow. But right now we're going to match up a little bit."
