Downs (sprained toe) felt good following Friday's bullpen session but his return date is still uncertain, the team's official site reports. Recommendation: "He feels good," manager Cito Gaston said. "That's about all I can tell you. He feels good, and hopefully he gets back before the All-Star break. If not, we'll just suck it up until then." Those with a weekly roster deadline will face a tough decision as the outlook on Downs doesn't seem likely to change in the next few days. |

LHP Scott Downs, on the disabled list with a strained big toe on his left foot, threw a bullpen session, marking the first time he has thrown since he injured himself breaking out of the batter's box in a game against the Phillies on June 16. Downs is eligible to come off the DL on Thursday, which is an off day. It would be a big plus for the Jays if Downs is able to pitch in the big four-game series against the Yankees in New York that starts Friday. However, that possibility is still up in the air. "It could be three days, a week, two weeks," Downs said. "It depends on when I can actually run on it. That's going to be the test. We'll throw another side on Friday and go from there." |
