C Ivan Rodriguez's work ethic is familiar to Jim Leyland, who predicts Rodriguez will become the first catcher to collect 3,000 hits.
"I think he'll get to 3,000 hits," Leyland said of the all-time hits leader among catchers. "Without a doubt, he's on a mission. I will not put it past him to get 3,000 hits. ... I think it's just a personal thing because he's already going to be in the Hall of Fame. That's a slam dunk. But I think it's just a goal he has set for himself."
The 14-time All-Star appreciated Leyland's comments.
"When you hear that from managers like that that have been in baseball a long time, it's something special," said Rodriguez, who has 2,658 hits. "I got tremendous respect for him. He knows how hard I play. He knows how hard I take care of myself and I work myself to keep myself in good shape. Probably the reason that he says is because he's seen me for 4 1/2 years and how I work before the games and after the games. He knows me very well." |
