PORT ST. LUCIE — Zack Short spent much of the winter expecting a call that never came, telling him the Mets had moved on from him. On Sunday he received a call to the manager's office telling him he was on the team's Opening Day roster. The 28-year-old infielder will open the season as part of the Mets' bench, after team brass decided to option Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse . Short, a Kingston, N.Y., native and former Sacred Heart University standout, was claimed off waivers from the Tigers in November, but after the Mets signed veteran infielder Joey Wendle , he figured he would be designated for assignment. First there was just Jake Rogers and a couple of coaches. Then Ryan Kreidler bounced out of the dugout, followed by Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson, Justyn-Henry Malloy, then Kerry Carpenter. Within a few minutes, as a light rain fell steadily Sunday morning at Clover Park, Zack Short was surrounded by a large circle of his former teammates. “He was beloved in our clubhouse,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said.
