Jonathan Papelbon’s top five career accomplishments: A fan’s opinion

Although Jonathan Papelbon(notes) is not as great as New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera(notes), the current Boston Red Sox closer has had a great career. To commemorate Papelbon's career, I have created the following list of his top five career accomplishments.

Statistics are current as of Aug. 15, 2011.

Has been to four All-Star games during his prolific career

Among his numerous career accomplishments, the 30-year-old closer has been to four All-Star games. Papelbon had All-Star seasons in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In my opinion, the current Red Sox closer could be selected to many more All-Star games, as he is one of the greatest closers in baseball.

Helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2007

Along with David Ortiz(notes) and Curt Schilling, Papelbon helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2007. During his second All-Star season, the 2007 Babe Ruth Award winner managed to save 37 games and had a staggering ERA of 1.85.

2007 Babe Ruth Award winner

Named after former Red Sox outfielder Babe Ruth, the Babe Ruth Award is given on an annual basis to the best player on the team that won the World Series. Although Ortiz and Schilling could have won the award, Papelbon was the 2007 Babe Ruth Award winner.

2007 DHL Delivery Man of the Year Award winner

Known for being a highly prestigious award, the DHL Delivery Man of the Year Award is given on an annual basis to the best closer in baseball. Since Papelbon had one of his greatest seasons in 2007, he was awarded for his great success as a closer. On an interesting note, Heath Bell(notes) of the San Diego Padres was the last winner of the award.

Papelbon has the most saves in the history of the Red Sox organization

The Red Sox have had a great number of highly successful closers, especially Dick Radatz and Bob Stanley. However, these closers were not as successful as Papelbon, as the current Red Sox closer is the current all-time saves leader for the Boston Red Sox.

Born in Weston, Massachusetts, Tom Harrington has been one of the most faithful fans of the Boston Red Sox. Although he briefly lived in New Jersey and Vermont, Tom was raised as a member of the Red Sox Nation and has been to many games within the past couple of years.
