Top 5 Punishments Ozzie Guillen Should Have Received for Castro Comments: Fan’s Opinion
Ozzie Guillen suspended five games
After declaring that he "loves" and "respects" Fidel Castro, Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has been suspended five games. Guillen has made a career of inserting his foot in his month, but his complimentary comments about Fidel Castro appear to have gotten him in more trouble than ever before.
However, given the large Cuban-American population among the Miami Marlins fan base, is a five-game suspension really enough of a punishment for Guillen? Take a closer look at the top five punishments Ozzie Guillen should have received for his pro-Castro remarks.
5. Spend 24 hours with a missile pointed at his house
I am not of Cuban or Latino descent. However, I was born in New Orleans as were my parents and I've heard horror stories about what it was like living during the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. I wonder if Ozzie Guillen would still love and respect Fidel Castro if he knew a dictator was aiming a missile at him and his home.
4. Float in a raft from Cuba to Florida
Scores of Cubans were so terrified of Fidel Castro that they were willing to risk their lives in homemade rafts to escape the brutal dictator's regime. Tragically, many of these Cubans lost their lives in the effort. Ozzie Guillen should float to Florida in one of these rafts to better understand how insensitive his comments were.
3. Spend an offseason in Cuba
Of course, to truly understand what it's like living under Fidel Castro, Ozzie Guillen should make a pilgrimage to Cuba. Clearly, Guillen doesn't understand the terror that Cuban citizens have endured for decades under Castro's dictatorship. One winter in Cuba may help Ozzie Guillen realize why people were upset by his Fidel Castro remarks.
2. Attend sensitivity training
Unfortunately, Ozzie Guillen has spoken without a filter many times before. He often comes across as funny which may explain why the media has always given him a free pass. However, Ozzie Guillen clearly needs professional help in realizing that as an MLB manager, his words carry weight and millions of fans hear what he says.
1. Get fired
It is unfathomable that Ozzie Guillen could keep his job as manager of the Miami Marlins in light of his Fidel Castro quote. The Marlins are trying to connect with their Cuban-American fan base which seems impossible now with Guillen as manager. Ozzie Guillen's Fidel Castro comments are wrong anywhere, but especially in Miami.
Patrick Michael is a resident of New Orleans, but grew up watching the Chicago Cubs on WGN with Harry Caray and Steve Stone as the Cubs announcers. A diehard Cubs fan, Patrick's favorite season was 1984 when the Cubs were one win away from reaching the World Series.
