Will Dellin Betances Ever Be a Star Pitcher for the New York Yankees? Fan’s View
Dellin Betances is a major league pitching prospect for the New York Yankees, my favorite baseball team, who will turn 24 on March 23, 2012. As a Yankees fan I have heard about Betances for a few years now, and the Yankees have touted him as a future star.
Will Dellin Betances ever be a star pitcher for the New York Yankees?
Dellin Betances has been pitching for the Yankees in the minor leagues for six years, since he was 18 years old in 2006. Over the six years, he has pitched a total of 426 innings, while pitching in 91 games, starting in 90 of them.
Betances has an overall record of 24-23 with an ERA of 3.49 in the minors. Betances has struck out 491 batters, and walked 205 batters. So he he struck out 10.4 batters and walked 4.3 batters per nine innings pitched. His strikeout to walk ratio is 2.40.
Dellin Betances is a Great Power Pitcher
Anytime a pitcher strikes out more than a batter per inning he's got talent. Anytime a pitcher walks over three batters per nine innings he's got a control problem. So Dellin Betances is a pitcher with talent who has a bit of a control problem.
The Yankees brought Dellin Betances up at the end of last season and let him pitch in two games in the major leagues. He pitched just 2.3 innings and walked six batters, while pitching to a 6.75 ERA. Other than getting his feet wet in the major leagues, Betances stats for the Yankees last year really mean nothing.
The stats that do matter from last year are Betances stats in AA and AAA. He started 25 games in the minors, 21 of them in AA, and went 4-9 with a 3.70 ERA. In 126.1 innings, Betances struck out 142 batters and walked 70. So he struck out 10.1 batters and walked 5.0 batters per nine innings.
Dellin Betances Walks Too Many Batters
That's a strikeout to walk ratio of 2.03. Dellin Betances clearly has talent, as his high strikeout rates attest, but at this point he just walks too many batters for anyone to ever think he will end up a star pitcher for the New York Yankees. Betances is a right-handed pitcher, and with the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium, right-handed pitchers need control.
Dellin Betances Can't Be a Star Pitcher for the Yankees Until His Control Gets Better
A.J. Burnett was a right-handed power pitcher who walked too many batters, and Yankees fans like myself saw how he did for us over the last two seasons.
Until Dellin Betances gets his walks totals down, I think he has little chance of being a star pitcher for the New York Yankees. With his high strikeout rate, I'd try to use Betances as a reliever.
