Should the New York Yankees Really Trade A.J. Burnett? Fan’s View

The New York Yankees are reportedly trying to trade pitcher A.J. Burnett to the Pittsburgh Pirates. If the trade happens, most fans will say good riddance to him after his last two awful seasons. Is it really a good idea for the Yankees to be trading A.J. Burnett though?

A.J. Burnett Won Critical Game Two of 2009 World Series vs Philadelphia Phillies for New York Yankees

I've been a New York Yankees fan since I was a kid over 40 years ago. I was not in favor of the Yankees signing A.J. Burnett to a huge contract back in December of 2008. But we won the World Series in 2009, with A.J. Burnett winning a huge game for us in the second game of the series vs the Philadelphia Phillies, after we had lost the first game.

From a sheer numbers standpoint though, trading A.J. Burnett makes a lot of sense. He's pitched terribly for us over the last two seasons, though he was good in 2009. In 2009, A.J. Burnett went 13-9 with a 4.04 ERA. In 2010 he was 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA, and in 2011 Burnett was 11-11 with a 5.15 ERA.

A.J. Burnett Has Pitched Terribly in 2010 and 2011 for Yankees

The Yankees have gone a combined 192-132 (.593) in 2010 and 2011. So A.J. Burnett went a combined 21-26 (.447) while pitching for a team that was winning over 59% of its games.

For baseball players though, I've always believed that long-term players usually revert back to what their overall stats are. When a veteran player with an established record comes out of the blue and has a great season, he will almost always revert back to what he was before the great season.

As an example, in 2005 Derrek Lee had an off the charts good year, setting career highs in just about every offensive category for the Chicago Cubs at age 29. The next season, Lee reverted right back to the player he had already established he was prior to the career year in 2005.

A.J. Burnett Will Probably Have Decent Year in 2012

For his career, A.J. Burnett is 121-111 (.522) with a 4.10 ERA. Not great numbers, but much better than what he has pitched to over the last two seasons. I'd be surprised if A.J. Burnett does not come back and pitch more to his career norms in 2012, than what he has shown over the last two seasons for whoever he pitches for. He is 35 years old now though, so it is also possible that he's just getting old and will never pitch back to his career norms.

A.J. Burnett was never really a great pitcher in his major league baseball career. That's why I was against his signing in the first place. He did win us a critical World Series in game in 2009 though. He also seems to be popular in the clubhouse, as he's the one who always smashes a towel filled with shaving cream into the face of any player who gets a walk-off hit.

A.J. Burnett was Never a Great Pitcher in His Career

Given that A.J. Burnett was never really a great pitcher in his career, combined with how badly he's pitched over the last two seasons, trading him probably makes sense for the Yankees.

I'm sure one of the other players will step in if A.J. is gone and deliver the shaving cream towel to the face of walk-off hitters. I expect A.J. Burnett to pitch much better in 2012 for whatever team he is playing for, but the Yankees have a plethora of starters who can do just as well or better.

I think a trade is best for Burnett and the Yankees. He is an enigma at best. We have all seen this guy be absolutely perfect for 5 innings and then go out in the 6th inning and completely lose everything. It dosen't matter if he is in a close game or with the Yankees ahead in a blow out. He does it time and again. I have never seen anyone lose their concentration as fast as this man. It is like he forgets where he is or what he is doing. Perhaps a trade with a club like the Pirates will take the pressure off and allow him to relax and pitch to his ability, if he has any left. Who knows, he may make a great comeback. I don't think he has a future with the Yankees. I think we would get more of the same.

We must all understand, we will have to pay to keep him or to let him go. So keep him and try to get something out of him. Maybe bullpen or minors to start year off.

"Should the New York Y ankees Really Trade A.J. Burnett?"?? Seriously??! Why would they want to keep a guy whose velocity is declining, who never had great control, and worst of all, has a fragile psyche? Yeah, Burnett won Game 2 against the Philliies, but he also gave the Phillies life when they beat him up in Game 5, and I believe he also was knocked around by the Angels in the ALCS as well. They need to take advantage of any opportunity they can to get rid of this guy--and run! As a Yankee fan, I am sock of seeing 5-0 deficits before the Yankees even come to bat, or the Yankees jumping out to a 4-0 lead then Burnett allowing three runs the next inning. The Yankees were up 13-0 in Chicago last summer and he couldn't make it past the fifth inning, allowing the White Sox back into the game. He needs to go.

Not that I am a Yankee fan at all, but they need to realize....you get a team that will take Burnett off your hands....DO IT AND RUN!!! Burnett is junk. If Pittsburgh wants this guy, GIVe him to them and maybe pay them a little to boot! The Pirates are doing you a favor!

The Yankees still have the option to save 33 million using a "Mechanic" LOL!

    I'm just joking.

But If this were the 60's and the Yankees were owned by an Italian, and he had paid a player a lot of money to perform and the player failed to do his job, that player would have disappeared, probably into a 55 gallon drum filled with cement somewhere along the gulf coast of Florida! LOL~

AJ had been a head case for 10 years before the Yankees got him and worst part was they knew it. I agree about Joe Girardi he never has a clue when to take out a pitcher or let them continue. Colon went south right after Girardi pulled that stunt to get Posada to quit baseball. All the players in the clubhouse know what is going on. Look how hard the players on Detroit play for there manager. And now that most of there better players are gone or will soon be leaving, things will get much worse, oh well live and learn!

I put 50% of A.J.'s failure on Gerardi. You start with an insecure pitcher and pitch him into the 6th. He pitches great, then gives up a walk and scratch hit. In A.J.'s case, you need to pull him out and give him some stats and some confidence that he is pitching well. Instead.....after a 3 run homer and a couple of doubles, A.J. sucks and loses another one. You could see it coming every time. After the fifth inning, I'd put in a long reliever every time. Its better than knowing what's coming, and who knows, maybe A.J. starts clearing his head a little. If nothing else, his numbers are better for a potential trade.

In my opinion, a horrible deal. AJ still has the ability to deliver. I think that a minor leap of faith is required here. He's got guts, ability, and the Yankee way inside him. Hold on for another year.

If the Pirates are willing to let go a gallon-jug of potato salad, the Yanks shd do the deal.

There is one other way out for the Yankees to save 33 million.

If AJ should happen to meet his maker, I am of course reffering to a non baseball accident or illness during the off season, I believe the contract is then null and void.

Does anyone know a "Mechanic" LOL

I think the man can still pitch but just not in N.Y. There is too much pressure for him there cuz he thinks too much. But in the three years he was a yankee how many times was he on the dl? The man is an inning eater which is good for the bulpen. Who is gonna take his spot Hughes? He has been on the dl 3 of his 4 major league seasons. Garcia is getting old just like Burnett. What they need to do is keep him as the number 5 starter and put Hughes and Garcia back in the pen. They have a good rotation with the first four starters and keeping Burnett at 5 will give the pen a rest every fifth day.

They never should have signed him in the first place, and for that amount that was nuts!
Before the Yankees signed him he had 10 years pitching in the majors and his record was 87 - 76 that works out to 8.7 wins and 7.6 loss A little over .500. Who in there right mind would give any pitcher with that kind of record 13 plus million a year? The AJ deal for the Yankees has to be the worst in there history.

Four years ago when this trade was made I posted on Pinstripe Alley that I thought the Yankees were crazy to not only sign him but pay him that much, and I said he was nothing more then .500 pitcher.
The so called great know it all Pinstripe Alley Yankee fans at that site told me to shut up, that I didn't know what I was talking about.
Funny thing, I don't recall seeing any of them at the original Yankee Stadium on June 8th 1969 for Mickey Mantle day. Course there much younger and smarter then I am.
They act like little girls, so I don't bother with these click sites like Pinstripe Alley anymore!

Burnett pitched well against the Yankees and Yankees management used this as the main reason to acquire him. Big mistake! Some people can't handle the NY pressure. Remember Randy Johnson who on his first day almost hit a photographer? Players like Matsui and Damon thrive on pressure. Those two players would not have cracked in that fifth game against the tigers last year. You hang on to players like that

Burnett in the national league will face pitchers and generally weak lineups. My guess is that he will land in the national league. What American League team would trade for him?

    Goodbye A.J.

I heard some announcer say this in the past - A.J. has a million dollar arm but a 10 cent head. He definitely has the raw ability to be a great pitcher but his head keeps getting in the way. When he is "on" and his head is in the right place, he is one of the best in the game. But when he is "off", he is awful. The problem is that the last few years he has been off more than he has been on. Time for the Yankees to give one of the young guys a shot. Trade AJ while he still has value.

He was a decent with the Jays, did ok in 2009 but gone downhill after that. I sure hope Yanks are able to get rid of him. Too inconsisent. I think he will be fine with the Pirates. No pressure for him there.

He sucks. If he concentrated a little more on fixing his delivery and less on being the class clown he might actually reach his potential. After 2 years of watching this bum blow game after game after game this is one life long Yankee fan who has seen enough.

We ALL wanted him to do well, but it did not work out. In fact, it worked out worse than we ever imagined. We could have signed just about anyone that could have done as well as Burnett. Sorry, but see ya!
