Giambi leaves with groin injury

BRONX, NEW YORK (TICKER) New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi left Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to a sore left groin.

The Yankees’ designated hitter in the 6-3 loss, Giambi exited prior to the bottom of the fifth inning.

“I just overextended it a little bit, but I don’t see any problems with it,” Giambi said. “I just told (acting manager) Rob Thomson. He said it was too early (in the season) and just to get out of there. It just tightened up a little bit.”

Giambi, who was replaced by Wilson Betemit, has been listed as day-to-day.

Giambi, 37, appeared in just 83 games during an injury-shortened 2007 season, when he batted .236. But the former American League MVP did not seem worried by his latest injury.

“I’m going to come in prepared being able to (play), and we’ll go from there,” said Giambi, who has just one hit in his first 12 at-bats this season. “I don’t feel it when I walk.

“It was just a situation where it got tight being so early in the season a little bit cold. With me DHing, (Thomson) just said, ‘Go in there and make sure it’s OK.’”
