Rangers place Ponson on waivers

ARLINGTON, TEXAS (TICKER) —The Texas Rangers on Monday placed righthander Sidney Ponson on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Ponson was designated for assignment on June 6 after he went 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA in nine starts for the Rangers this season, statistics that were overshadowed by some off-the-field issues.

Ponson was originally signed to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training on March 9.

Also on Monday, the Rangers reinstated righthander Thomas Diamond from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Class AA Frisco of the Texas League.
