Mets sign IF Saenz

FLUSHING, NEW YORK (TICKER) —The New York Mets on Tuesday signed infielder Olmedo Saenz as a six-year minor league free agent and invited him to spring training.

While just a .263 career hitter, the 37-year-old Saenz has been one of the game’s most productive pinch hitters over the past four seasons.

Last season, he batted just .222 (14-for-63) as a pinch hitter with the Los Angeles Dodgers. But his 14 hits off the bench ranked fourth in the majors.

Saenz has a career average of .256 (72-of-281) as a pinch hitter with 12 home runs and 58 RBI. The 12 homers rank 11th on the all-time list for pinch hitters.

Overall, Saenz batted just .191 last season, appearing in 75 games as a pinch hitter.
