Dodgers place C Bennett on DL

LOS ANGELES (TICKER) —The Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday placed catcher Gary Bennett on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis of the left foot.

Bennett has had trouble throwing all season, although the Dodgers do not know if the sore foot has contributed to the problem.

The issue surfaced again in the Dodgers’ weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Bennett was charged with an error on a wild throw to first base that allowed a run to score in Friday’s loss. He made another errant throw in Sunday’s defeat that did not lead to a run.

Bennett, who has been receiving help from a sports psychologist, has started only six games this season. He is batting .190 with a home run and four RBI for the season.

To take Bennett’s spot on the roster, the Dodgers recalled 33-year-old catcher Danny Ardoin from Class AAA Las Vegas. He was batting .303 with four homers and 16 RBI at Las Vegas.

Ardoin became the Colorado Rockies’ starting catcher in 2005, but suffered a knee injury in a collision at the plate with former Dodger Jose Cruz Jr.

In another move, the Dodgers transferred righthander Jason Schmidt to the 60-day disabled list.
